Chapter 12

Surprises

“I’ve got wonderful news,” Claude announces one afternoon. “Your outfits are ready. They look amazing.”

“Are they here?” Byron asks.

“Can we try them on?” Jayden asks.

“Does Peanut get one as well?” Dineo asks.

Claude throws his hands into the air. They fall silent. “No, the costumes aren’t here. They are at my house. You can try them on later. It’s a surprise for now.”

“And Peanut?” Dineo keeps at it. “Is he also getting one?”

Claude laughs. “Of course! He’s got the cutest little jacket covered in sequins.”

Peanut seems very pleased. It’s as if he understands what’s going on.

“When will we see the clothes?” Tasha asks.

“At the dress rehearsal, my little star,” Claude answers. “Dreamers, everything is falling into place now. The festival programme is being printed at this very moment. Your names are in it! The organisers are so excited about our show. I keep them informed of your progress. If they weren’t so busy, they would’ve come down to see for themselves. But I set them at ease. I know what they expect. They will get it.”

Byron and the other Dreamers smile broadly. Tasha grabs Byron around the neck with joy.

“That reminds me,” Claude says after a while. “There is a final little hiccup. Unfortunately, our biggest sponsor fell through. I tried everything I could. I know it is bad. But we’re not going to let that ruin our plans. If every one of you can contribute a thousand rand, our costs will be covered: the lighting, the hiring of the theatre, personnel. Everything!”

Claude smiles reassuringly.

Byron’s stomach turns. R1 000!
